Bowling Balls: A Purchasing Guide

If you love bowling and often spend your weekends in a bowling alley, it might be high time for you to consider buying your own bowling ball. This will save you the time to hunt for the perfect ball every time you go to the bowling alley and playing with your own ball gives you the advantage of playing with a ball that has the right fit and weight meaning it can increase your success in the game. Choosing a material for your bowling ball’s coverstock

1. Plastic bowling balls

Bowling balls with coverstock made out of plastic or polyester are the cheapest. Plastic bowling balls are recommended for beginners and casual bowlers. Bowling balls in a bowling alley are plastic bowling balls. This is the first type of coverstock introduced in the sport. This type of ball is easy to handle but they do not have enough potential to do hooks or spins.

2. Urethane bowling balls

Urethane bowling balls are more expensive than plastic bowling balls but they are priced reasonably. These balls have more potential for spins and hooks. It will also roll more evenly compared to plastic bowling balls. It has a greater pin carry so at impact, a urethane bowling ball will be able to knock down more pins.

3. Reactive resin bowling balls

These balls are not as durable as urethane or plastic balls but they offer more control when you do your hooks and spins and perform better when you need power for strikes. The resin particles in the coverstock increases friction, giving great potential for hooking.

4. Particle coverstock bowling balls

This type of bowling ball has the most friction and reaction compared to the other coverstocks, making them ideal for professional bowlers who wants to compete with a high-speed ball. The coverstock is reactive resin with tiny pieces of ceramic or glass, which helps increase friction further.

Knowing the right size

The appropriate bowling ball size you should have will depend on your endurance and weight. You should try playing with bowling balls of different sizes until you find one that fits you. Professional bowlers usually choose a ball that is just below ten percent of their body weight.

Finger holes matter

To play properly, your fingers should be able to fit perfectly in the holes. Some professionals custom drill their finger holes in order to get that perfect fit. You can also do the same if you can not find a comfortable fit for your fingers. Playing with your own bowling ball gives you consistency in your stroke because your fingers will be used to its position compared to playing with different bowling balls in a bowling alley.
