Wishing Without Nicole

Jas

Jas is sitting all on her own at the Loner Lunchers' table. It's where all the lonely people sit. Nobody sits there anymore in case they get bullied and teased for it.

I push Nicole's wheelchair past her.

"Hey, Jas," I mutter as I walk past.

She looks up with sad eyes, honey dripping down one side of her mouth. Drip drip. "Oh, hi  Mackenzie." Drip drip.

I look behind me as I walk faster and faster. She watches me go, wheeling Nicole away. All that has changed about her is the sad look and the honey. Drip drip.

Lessons With Sloane

Straight after school, Sloane comes round my house. I'm still helping her overcome her low self-esteem and regain her fading shine.

She sits down on the sofa and pops open a can of Pepsi. As I sit down beside her, she takes a large swig.

"So, are you ashamed of yourself or something?" I ask her.

Drinking from the Pepsi, she shakes her head.

"Well, then what is it exactly?"

Sighing, Sloane puts her can down on the coffee table. "I'm sensitive. Like really sensitive. I guess I just can't control my emotions. I need to learn how."

I think for a moment. I really need Nicole, or Angela, or Nathan. But all I have is well, me. Because I've already promised Sloane that I won't tell anyone about this.

"Well," I answer thoughtfully, "I'll see what I can do."

The Wheelchair

Once I finish up at Sloane's house, her mum's boyfriend takes me home. When I get into my house, I notice Nicole standing in the middle of the foyer.

"Wow, Nicole!" I gasp. "You're not on your wheelchair anymore!"

She shakes her head. "I never was. Let's go sit down and I'll explain."

As we head into the living room, she asks me where I've been.

"A-At the park. I needed some fresh air," I lie.

She nods as if she believes me, but I can't tell if she does or not. And then it happens. I make the wish...
