Agatha is jupiter is agatha

Agatha looked through the telescope. The staff at the Griffith Observatory had told her she would be able to see Jupiter. In the back of her mind, she’d hoped it would be Venus, because that would have been more romantic, but Jupiter would do.

She squinted a little and there it was, slightly blurry with the big red spot, or as her younger sister used to call it, its blemish. Agatha felt a bit like Jupiter. She had a blemish, too, and she knew his name.

She was supposed to be there with Eddie, but Eddie had ceased being part of her life when her friend had seen him on a dating app three months ago. Agatha had been angry and hurt and had wished great harm on him. She wouldn’t admit that to anyone. In truth, no one would think it of her.

Eddie’s betrayal had been difficult to come to terms with. She stared at the planet a bit longer. She was happy it was Jupiter.

“What’s it like?” came a man’s voice from beside her. A calm voice, no hint of sarcasm. An interesting voice.

“Lonely,” Agatha said. “It’s far away and it’s lonely.”

The man laughed, which was loud in the hushed room.

“It is far away. Seven hundred and seventy-eight point five million kilometres away. But I’m not sure it’s lonely.”

“No?”

“It has seventy-nine moons.”

“Seventy-nine? Greedy.”

Agatha looked away from the telescope. The room was dark, but they smiled at each other nonetheless.
