Chapter 1

Review time.  Even Hell couldn’t escape bureaucracy.  Sian sat in an uncomfortable chair, all chairs in Hell were uncomfortable or it wouldn’t be Hell, and waited nervously for Azazi, his supervisor, to arrive.  Seconds ticked by and each one felt like an eternity.
The door opened and Sian turned to see Azazi entering the room. He was every inch the bureaucrat.  He wore black horn rimmed glasses, what hair he had remaining was combed neatly back and he even wore a suit.
A lumped formed in Sian’s throat.   Tis review wasn’t going to be favorable.  In his defense, he did try.
“Sian,” Azazi said as he sat down in his desk chair.  The desk and the two chairs in the office were made of bones.  A skull sat on the desk and two pens were inserted in skull’s eye sockets.  “It wasn’t a good year for you.”
“I know,” he sighed.  “I tried. I really did, but things…went wrong.”
Azazi nodded. “Yes, it does look that way. Shall we begin?”
    Sian nodded.
“You failed to tempt the person you possessed into any of the seven virtues.”
Sian sank into his chair.  “I know. Each time I tried, something good happened.”
“Pride and Greed. Would you like to tell me what happened?”
“I got him to raise the most money ever raised for any event in his town and he was rather proud of that.”
Azazi nodded and made some notes on his tablet.  “Did he keep any of the money?”
Sian shook his head. “No. He raised it for charity. He gave every last penny away.”
Azazi frowned. “So average for pride, but no on avarice.”
Sian nodded solemnly.  “Yes,” he sighed.  “He even got honored with the key to the town and a day in his honor. There was no vainglory or excessive pride.”  Sian’s stomach was sinking to his feet.
    “Next up, gluttony.”
Sian sank deeper into the chair.
“I see he bought hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout cookies.”
“He did,” Sian confirmed.  “Two hundred to be exact.”
“But he only ate one box.”
    “I know,” Sian sobbed.
“He gave the rest to homeless people.  The Girl Scouts ended up selling the most of any troop.”
Sian’s sobbing increased.
There was an exasperated sigh from Azazi.  “Shall we go on?”
    “Must we?” Sian asked.
    “We must.”
    Sian whimpered.
“I’m afraid so,” Azazi replied. “Now, moving on to lust.”
Sian’s whimpering increased and Azazi laid his pen down, giving up on this review. He hated it when they whimpered. “I think we can stop now.  You have failed in your assignment and instead of making life miserable for the human you possessed, you somehow made it better.  I’ll be sending my recommendations in and you’ll be contacted in a few days. Dismissed.”
A heavy sigh escaped him and Sian pulled himself out of the chair. He left the office, his head bowed and his feet dragging.
