Intro

This book is inspired by ‘The Selection’ series by Kiera Cass. The books are set in the future in a city called Ílea, where people are divided into different casts depending on their status; 8 being the lowest and 1 being the highest (royalty). This book (that I have yet to title or complete) is also set in Ílea, with the same cast system ect. The protagonist, Emery Painter, is a 5, whom usually get jobs in art or music. I really recommend reading the selection series, I was gripped and couldn’t put them down until I’d finished them all!

This book is incomplete and I have yet to finish figuring out the plot line ect, and it might not even become anything... But if you do enjoy the first chapter please let me know if you’d like to see more :)

Chapter 1

I loved the smell of books. Old ones especially, with crinkly yellow pages and thick dusty bindings. Why does no one ever read books anymore? It seems like such a waste of the thousands of words and stories that lay between the pages; parallel universes that nobody bothered to open and explore. Well I guess that meant all the more for me then. The library was where I spent most of my time; living as a family of 5’s in such a small flat was always hard growing up, and sometimes I just needed to get away from it all. Amos knew me so well that he let me sit on the library floor for hours on end; escaping to a different world before having to return to the boring reality of my own.

Damn it! I looked down at my watch that read 6:25. Late again. I slipped my shoes back on and hastily returned ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to it’s shelf, glad to have nearly finished it. “Coming again tomorrow Miss Emery?”

 I grinned, “you bet!”

As I sprinted home I felt the hard pavement through the thin soles of my shoes, but I made my best effort to ignore it while I rounded the final corner and fumbled with my keys to get in.

“Sorry - I’m - late” I breathed heavily as I dropped my school bag to the floor. Mum put on an annoyed face, but I could see underneath that she was tired and stressed. Mum and Dad got divorced when I was only 2, so I hardly knew Dad, but Mum still struggled and needed our help around the house. I greeted her with a warm hug and joined my sister Anne in making supper.

Anne was only 15, but she seems to have her whole future planned out for her already; both her and her boyfriend are 5s, and it’s as if they’d started painting straight out of the womb. Everyone could guess what would probably happen next; Caden would pop the question, the two of them would move in together, become successful artists and raise a happy family. As for me, you could say I was more of a book worm than a social butterfly. I have a few close friends at school, but I’ve never been interested in boys, let alone ever had a boyfriend. The only relationship I was conserved about was that of Romeo and Juliet, and that was the extent of my social life.

Once the chores were done and supper had been devoured, I threw my pyjamas on and selected one of the few books we had at home to read tonight. However I didn’t get very far; I’d had such a busy day that I practically fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and slept like a log for the whole night.
