Auvirn's Run

Into the Unexpected

Auvirn Teschler quickly adjusted her glasses and picked up her bags. Today was the big day. Job interviews were infamous for being hard, and, Auvirn would admit, she was nervous.

Before she knew it, she was on the plane. The gut-wrenching feeling that she was eventually going to have to actually do the job interview was overwhelming. At least there were about five hours, not counting stops, between her and the dreadful encounter. Only reasons I'm getting a job are to get money, have something to do, maybe even meet my someone, Auvirn thought.

Just then the cabin crew came in, interrupting her thoughts, and started blabbing about emergencies, electronics, blah blah blah. It actually put her to sleep for a few hours. Rough, jolting sleep. How fun. She then drifted off into a dream. It was odd, though that was normal.

She is running in a maze with tall, black walls webbed with cracks and covered in emerald-colored vines. Shadows dart everywhere, and Auvirn is covered in sweat. Finally she gets to the mountains. Taking out a roll of string, she feels for a hook located slightly to the right of the most crumbled wall. Finally she finds it. She ties the string to it and gets up, holding the roll just loosely enough to let it spin. Checking the horizon, she sets off towards the mountains. She isn't quite sure what she is looking for, and she only knows that she will know it is the right thing when she finds it. After a long and tedious hike up to the first false peak, she hears a loud cracking sound. After scurrying to hide behind a rock, she looks cautiously around it and sees It. Instantly she knows it's the one she's been looking for.

Suddenly Auvirn was awoken by a terrible jolting. Everyone around her panicked. A scream sounded somewhere behind her.

Finally realizing what was happening, Auvirn jumped up as a wave of overwhelming dizziness washed over her.

What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?! Auvirn thought. Panic consumed her, overloading her brain.

 Then everything turned black.

Introduced to New "Friends"

Auvirn woke to a throbbing pain in her thigh. As she reached down to rub it, she felt something warm and wet. She brought her hand up and cracked open her heavy eyelids. Dread coursed through her. Blood.

Moving her leg, she was relieved to know that it didn't hurt as bad as she expected. Her head drooped, and she collapsed on the ground once more. Just when she started to relax, the sound of twigs cracking and frantic whispering jolted her. She did her best to remain still, though, to pretend she was asleep in case something went wrong.

"--any of them alive?" a girl's voice said.

A lower voice hissed, "Just take as many as you can carry. Jon, take any supplies. Me and Felix will carry bodies to the horses."

Just then, Auvirn was lifted up by one of the voices. Warm hands picked her up, carried her a ways, and then heaved her over onto what she assumed could only be a horse.

Cracking her eye slightly open, Auvirn caught a glimpse of some of her captors. One had light brown hair combed into a pompadour; he was shorter than the other man, whose hair was cut into a shiny black crew cut. The other one, who was a girl, had platinum blond hair swept up into a braided bun, which by now had wispy strands of hair sticking out at random angles. Every other minute she would try to tuck one back in, which didn't seem to work too well.

Then Auvirn's eyes met the blonde's midnight blue ones, and Auvirn quickly closed them, hoping she hadn't noticed. But, of course, she had. The blonde let out a small shriek and breathlessly whispered to the black-haired man, who gasped.

Auvirn's heart raced as she heard them coming towards her, and soon she was seized by a strong hand. She tried her best to remain limp, but the man shook her so hard that she opened her eyes and swung her fist at his black-haired head, but to no avail. He caught it in a grip of iron.

"We will take this one captive. Mallory, you check around for any more survivors.  We wouldn't want our dogs to be eating live flesh, now would we?"

At that comment, his lip curled into a cruel smile, which actually looked more like a grimace. Mallory, as Auvirn had now found out, stared at her long and hard, as if warning her, before walking away to check for survivors.

The light-haired man stood, waiting for orders. He cleared his throat and said, "Jarom, sir? What would you like me to do?"

The man with the black hair, Jarom, averted his gaze from Auvirn and addressed the light-haired man.

"Felix, do me a favor. Tie this one up," he said, nodding towards Auvirn.

Auvirn groaned as the light-haired young man she now knew as Felix picked her up and with a grunt. He walked her over to a rock, which he laid her down on. She saw him bend over, and when he straightened, he held rope in his hand.

"Don't move, sweetheart, or I will kill you," he whispered into her ear.

She whimpered as Felix tied her hands, feet, legs, and arms. Then he gagged her, and for good measure, blindfolded her. She was then lifted onto the warm furry body of a horse.

She was bumped along in blackness, and before she knew it, she had ten times the bruises as before.

So much for the job interview. I guess my main priority now is to survive, Auvirn thought.

Hall of the Mountain King

Finally, Felix pulled the horse to a stop, and dismounted with Auvirn over his shoulder. She heard a few people whimpering, probably other survivors. She couldn't see them though, of course, since she was blindfolded.

Felix was carrying her down a hall, and she could feel the rhythm of his feet, one after another. After about a thousand thumps which were starting to drive Auvirn insane, Felix stopped.

Auvirn was thrown brutally onto the ground, glasses almost cracking.

Thank heavens, she thought, I'd be blind without them.
