Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder

What Is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, which is the liquid part of milk that separates during cheese production.

Milk actually contains two main types of protein: casein (80%) and whey (20%).

Whey is in the aqueous portion of milk. When the cheese is produced, the fat parts of the milk coagulate and the whey is separated from it as a by-product.

If you have already opened a yogurt container to see the floating liquid on the top, this is whey. The cheese makers used to discard them before they discovered its commercial value.

After being separated during cheese production, whey goes through various processing steps to become what people generally recognize as whey protein – a powder that is added to shakes, meal replacements and protein bars.

Whey protein does not taste very good on its own, which is why it is usually flavored. Chocolate flavored powders, vanilla and strawberry are very popular.

It is important to read the list of ingredients, as some products may have unhealthy additives such as refined sugar.

Taking whey protein is a convenient way to add 25 to 50 grams of protein on top of your daily intake.

This can be important for bodybuilders and gym enthusiasts, as well as people who need to lose weight or are simply lacking protein in their diet.

Most flavored whey proteins are also quite delicious and can be used to add incredible flavor to healthy recipes like smoothies.

Whey is generally well tolerated, although people with lactose intolerance should be cautious, and some people may even be allergic to it.

Whey Protein Benefits

Help with weight loss: In a study of 158 people, published in Nutrition & Metabolism, those who received whey “lost significantly more body fat and showed greater lean muscle retention compared to subjects who consume the control drink. ”

Anti-cancer properties: Promising results have been published in the journal Anticancer Research for the use of whey protein concentrate in the treatment of cancer. More research is needed.
Lowering cholesterol: A study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, gave whey supplements to 70 overweight men and women for 12 weeks and measured a number of parameters, such as lipid and insulin levels. They found that “there was a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol at week 12 in the whey group compared to casein (group).”

Asthma: Whey protein may improve the immune response in children with asthma. A small study involving 11 children, published in the International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, found that children with asthma who were supplemented with 10 grams of whey protein twice a day for 1 month had a better immune response.

Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Disease: Research published in the International Dairy Journal found that beverages that were supplemented with whey protein significantly reduced blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure; the risk of developing heart disease or stroke was also lower.

Reducing weight loss in people with HIV: A study published in the journal Clinical and Investigative Medicine found that whey protein can help reduce weight loss in HIV-positive patients.
