Chapter (1)

 Jason's P.O.V

I, Jason Peterson, am jogging up and down the stairs when my mother calls out.

"Jason!! Why aren't you coming down for breakfast?"

" I'm just doing a little work out."

"You've been doing that for an hour now. It's already 9:30 am!"

     "Coming, mom!!"

     "Good morning, sweetheart."

     "Morning."

"So, would you like a toast?" I love toasts. But still something is missing. Milk. I drink about three or four cups of milk a day. Well, my dream is to become a champion athlete, a marathon runner, to be exact. So, I need to be strong. Being strong is the best, actually the only thing I can do in my check list to achieve my dream.

"Yeah. And do we have milk?"

     "Always. Want some?"

     "Please."

     "....."

     "Um... Jason?"

     "Yeah?"

"Well, your father and I've been talking about this lately... I was wondering if you would like to enter school marathon this year."

     "Mom!!"

"I know, honey. I know how you feel but, you gotta keep up with your dreams. It's the right way to live."

"Do I look like I could run in a marathon? Mom, I don't know if you noticed but I'm blind. Okay?"

"Snap out of it, Jason Peterson!! Being blind in your eyes doesn't mean being blind in your life. I know it might be a little hard for you and all but, all we need is a good coach, practice and you will do just fine. I know you can do this."

     *sigh*

     "Come on, honey."

"I know you don't want me to give up with my life and don't worry, mom. I won't. I'm just... not ready."

"It's not even a reason! You've got to believe in yourself."

"... Fine. I'll think about it."

"Thanks, baby. You can do this." And she hugs me. I can imagine that she might be smiling right now. Even though I cannot see her smile, I still know it's the most beautiful smile in the world.

     "And... you're going out today?"

"Not really. Zoey's on vacation. I'll be staying in." Zoey, if you wonder, is my best friend... well, let me put it in another way. She is my only friend. She is actually the nicest person at school. I mean who would want to be friends with a blind, gay boy anyway? Now, don't freak out. Right, I am gay and everyone knows that, even my parents. I am not very shy about my sexuality and I have never been. Sure, I get a few... I mean a lot of hate eyes and gross bullies all around me at school and all but apart from that, I am absolutely fine. I mean, not every people in the world are homophobes. I do not really care anyway. I am not one of those crybabies. Even though there is nothing i can do about those bullies but I really do not care.

"Okay. Oh... watch out for your bag. It's under the stairs. You left it on the couch yesterday so, I just put it there."

     "Thanks."

"Phew..." I let out a long sign as I lay on my bed. Now, come to think of it. A blind boy like me in a race? Doesn't it look... helpless and I don't know, pathetic? But still, I cannot really let my parents down. After all, they have been trying their best to get me an ordinary life. I do have an ordinary life... except for my eyes.

Brian's P.O.V

The sun is shining brightly outside and the weather is being lovely. And me? Well, I am sitting in my class teacher's office, waiting for my dad to show up.

    *Knock Knock Knock*

     "Come in, please"

"Good evening, Mr. Roberts. I heard my boy", he glares at me and continues,"has caused some troubles, again."

"I'm afraid so, Mr. Hamilton. Your son fought with a couple of boys during lunch break. Their parents have come and picked them up."

"I see... I'm terribly sorry about Brian. I promise I'll keep a sharp eye on him from now on."

"I hope you do, Mr. Hamilton. And I hate to say this but the Principal is hoping to see you and talk about your son."

*What!!??? I didn't do anything that bad to be seen by the Principal!* I am yelling inside.

     "Oh... will he be... expelled?"

"No. No, Mr. Hamilton. He won't be. I believe it'll be just a small talk."

"Oh. Thank God", my dad signs.

"So, can you please sign this form?"

     "Yes. Sure."

     "And you too, Brian."

     "Yes."

"And you must know that this is actually the third time you signed for breaking the school's rules during the first four months of this year. Are you aware that you can get expelled if it is the fifth time?"

"Yes, Mr. Roberts..." I can literally feel my dad glaring at me now.

"Now, Mr. Hamilton, may I take you to the Principal's office?"

"Yes, please." Here we go. I seriously cannot tell what is going to happen to me now...

The Principal is sitting in his office waiting for us when we go into his office.

"So, Mr. David and Brat Hamilton, I asked to meet you because I wish to help Brian out with his CATs."

     "Excuse me?"

" Let me explain this, Mr. Hamilton. As you know, CATs take about 40% of the students' grades in our school. And CATs are recorded due to the students' cooperation, attendance, teamwork, sports activities and class tutorials and practicals. And obviously, Brian here is very low in his CATs. So, what I'm trying to say is in order to improve his grades, and to get a chance to join the university he wants to, he should try his best to get high CATs for the rest of the school year."

" Oh... I guess he should, Mr. Principal. And what exactly does he need to do?"

"For that matter, I've already found a great idea. Yesterday, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, who are the parents of a blind boy attending our school, came to meet me. I believe you know him, Brian. Anyway, they told me that their son is hoping to join the school's marathon club and take part in the upcoming race. And... they are looking for a student to help their son practice and to guide him during the race." What the actual f**k does that suppose to mean?!

"Ah... excuse me. Are you saying that I should help him out?"

     "Exactly, Brian."

"How exactly do I do that? I mean, I'm not even in the marathon club and you want me to run with a blind boy?"

"Son, you'll be fine! You always go for a jog in the morning anyway."

     "But this... this is different!"

"Brian, this will help not help only him but also you. You don't even need to have second thoughts about this." At this very moment, I can see hope in my father's eyes. My father has been raised me and my younger brother on his own ever since our mother left us and disappeared. He has always been on our side for as long as I can remember. I can't let his down like this...

"Fine... I'll give it a try."

     "Now, that's my boy."

"Thank you, Brian. If it is settled, then I'll call the Petersons about this. I believe they will be very happy and grateful for your assistance."

     "Okay. It's settled."
