United States: Smoking cessation thanks to e cigarettes is a success

Introduction

In 15 years, the smoking cessation rate in the United States has never been higher than between 2014 and 2015. How can we make it possible to affirm that smoking cessation thanks to electronic cigarettes is a success? According to a media, this success would be a clever mix between more regular prevention campaigns and the e-cigarette, which would help to keep smokers away from conventional tobacco. To assert these facts, journalists based themselves on a study conducted by researchers at the University of California.

Smoking cessation thanks to e cigarettes: a success?

Researchers at the University of California analyzed studies conducted on vapers that were to report their consumption. The survey was conducted between 2001 and 2015. Soothed with the analysis, the scientists made a positive assessment. While "the rate of smokers who quit smoking was 4.5% on average every year", as Prof. Shu-Hong Zhu explains, this rate was raised to 5.6% between 2014 and 2015. This represents 350000 people. Among this panel, it appeared that 65% of those who used the vape were able to wean themselves, compared with 40% of those who did not choose the vapes.

According to the author of the study, the 1.1% increase is due to the impact of prevention campaigns carried out since 2012, but also "the popularity of  e cigarettes since 2014".

Cigarettes are a scourge of cardiovascular health. This is true for a daily smoker, and also true for an occasional smoker. Social smoking, i. e. smoking in society at a party from time to time, is just as dangerous as regular smoking. This is confirmed by a recent study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, the results of which were released by BFMTV.

Social smoking: there is no harmless smoking

Researchers at Ohio State University have looked at the risks to occasional smokers, those who comply with social smoking and do not use tobacco every day. The results are unquestionable, social smoking is as dangerous for cardiovascular health as daily smoking. A "evening" smoker is as risky as a regular daily smoker.

This type of smoking would be based on the results of the study responsible for high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. In order to achieve these results, professionals interviewed 39,555 smokers. Among them 10% thought they were occasional smokers. Daily and social smokers had high blood pressure for 75% of those surveyed, and 54% had high cholesterol levels." Not smoking at all is the best solution. Even smoking in a social situation is detrimental to cardiovascular health,"says Professor Kate Gawlik of Ohio State University, whose comments are echoed by BFMTV.
