The Fire

I feel she's here, now, in the room. Don't ask me how  I knew, I just felt it in my gut. I never second-guess my gut feelings. I  looked up carefully, as to not let the others know what I was doing. I scanned my eyes across the room, seeing the blur of familiar faces, not seeing him anywhere. I glanced at the clock-it was a quarter to one. I sighed, she should be here by now. I looked back at my lunch and continued to eat my sandwich. Not listening to the thoughtless chatter surrounding me in the high school cafeteria, I wondered where she was, because she certainly wasn't sitting at her normal table with her friends. I did another scan, and then looked back at her table. She wasn't sitting in her normal seat, still. I frowned, slightly. Oh well, hopefully she'll stop by the girls' table on the way out with her posse. I continued eating lunch, lost in my thoughts. "Fitz.", a voice said.

I looked up, "Yeah?" It was Rachel, a friend that sat at the table everyday, along with Anthony, Colton, Madi, Daniel, and Max.

"So, what did you think of the APUSH exam? Was it as tough as we all expected it to be? I have it next, you know. Was staying up 'til one studying last night worth it?", she smiled. Of course she stayed up late studying. That's just like her.

I pasted a smile on my face and said, "Eh. It wasn't too bad. The essay was the hardest, like always- be sure you know the causes and effects of the WWI for America."

"Whew! That's fantastic. Thanks," and she turned her attention back to Madi, who was smirking at a joke Daniel had just said. She and Madi had been best friends for as long as anyone who knows anything can remember. They did everything together, and they could thank middle school band for putting them together. Actually, the entire table could thank band because that's how we all befriended each other. Since we all stuck with band from sixth grade up to senior year, this year, we've become closer every year. Marching band does that to people, you become closer with everyone- even the underclassmen. I laughed silently, I suppose I did befriend the underclassmen. Especially her. Ugh. I need to stop, and I need to stop now. This isn't right, I thought. I've been over it a million times already. I can't feel like this, and she certainly doesn't feel like that, I'm sure. There's no way.

Looking at my table, full of friends, I slightly smiled. These are great people, and I'm extremely lucky to have all of them. They're hilarious. Glancing at the clock to see when I need to leave for sixth period, I noticed her. I stopped chewing for a few seconds while I watched her walk towards her table from the lunch line. Ah, so that's where she was. I forgot to look there earlier. She looked content, but...in deep thought. Lately she's seemed like that. She grinned and sat down with her friends, as they immediately started talking to her. She sat in her normal seat, with her back to the floor-to-wall windows. I looked out into the courtyard through them, it was a bright sunny day, a nice change from the dreary rain we had just gotten over. She seemed to enjoy the seat, probably because she liked the sun warming her back, rather than blinding her, as it would if she sat at the opposite side of the table, I guessed. And because it was next to him. John. John Cyrus, her boyfriend.
