We are Safe?

Nora Paterson, a tall long black hair 23 university student, dressed in a slim red oxford shirt and a buttery black skirt, Gazing at the days blazing headlines, took up an glowing issue if the “Jamaica Witness” newspaper.

It screams, “US/World at War!” which expounded on how President Gates had Declare war on North Korea.

A Taxi Stop in front of her, she could hear the prime ministers voice saying,

“The government of Jamaica has reassured our neutrality on the matter. We assure you that our valuable relations with China and Cuba are held in neutrality. Should our involvement in this war become a necessity?

The Jamaica defense force has more than the adequate military training to address our defensive and Offensive concerns of all Jamaicans…”

The allies, enemies and powers of the fight, Nora then worries as she looked down main street Kingston, which was teaming with people.

*d(5) daymark

Nora kissed her teeth and exclaimed “oh sure, the will protect us”, she did not believe the countries 110,000 strong military had the experience nor the capability to come up against a force like North Koreas Allies and still have reinforcements left to protect the rest of the 2 million strong population. It also came to her memory that the prime minister herself was, as usual, read her text from what was given to her by a speech writer thus any possible event would not have been eventful in her sight.

Nora continued to beam at the thought of such an absurdity and walk enter the nearest taxi she could find, which already had three  passengers, dressed for the medical distress of becoming a nurse and surely heading in the direction of Patterson Street, the location of The prestigious University of The Caribbean (UC).

Nora then proceeds to instruct the driver to head to the Jamaica Zeus Hotel, which was having a TechCon Tech conference, Nora was a blogger.

The phone rang, “Ava Marieeeee eeeee ahhhhhh”.

The Girls, Dressed in nursing regalia who sat beside Nora stair at her while she immediately flashed into the search for her fancy Blot Vision Mobile Phone. The Driver slowed down, as if to think about the ringing Then chuckled with the other two passengers in the vehicle until Nora had found her phone.

“Hello!” Nora spoke in great astonishment to the many staring eyes that where now turning away to the car left window, where the potential nurses sat.

“Where are you?” yelled the other line, who was Nora’s friend Andrew who was also a Blogger and aspiring Journalist.

“I am just on my way…. I am just around the corner.” assured Nora who was a mile away from the Hotel but gave a little white lie none the less to assure a peace of mind for Andrew.

“Make it Quick because it is almost 2:09 pm and you are lucky the meeting has not started as yet” replied Andrew.

“So see you there then… Bye” Nora answered as she place the cell phone into here bag.

“Here is your stop” to Nora’s amazement shouted the Taxi driver.

The driver stopped across the road from the hotel and said he could drop me off in front of the hotel because he said he had heard that there was a police patrol in the vicinity.

“Aren’t you not going into the Hotel?”

“Sorry dear but I am on a tight delivery right now” said the driver as the  prospective  nurses stared into Nora’s eyes, like they were telling her to hurry up and pay the damn driver so we can get the heck to our destination on time.

Nora proceeded to pull out two shiny crisp looking new thousand dollar bills she had in my purse and handed it to the driver. The Driver held it up to the bright glow of sun then handed Nora her eight hundred dollars change and sped away into the high traffic.

Nora then walked across all the traffic and onto the Hotel where she found Andrew at the doors having a discussion with the doorman, a sure discussion she would hear about from Andrew, who had keen way of starting a discussion on anything and knowing how to end one.

It was a sure skill that would come in handy in his potential field of journalism.

Nora yells “Andrew!” Andrew looked eager to see Nora and pave the way for Nora by ending his discussion with the Doorman who was now heading to take up a set of bags.

“You are finally here” said a smiling Andrew, a smile that reminiscent of a five year old receiving candy.

“Has the meet up start yet?” said Nora while looking at her glittery watch, which told the time as 2:15 pm.

“I am not sure, I have not made my way up yet because I was discussing the war the door man” answered Andrew, still shining a 32 of his teeth at Nora and passersby.

“So let us get up there and find out then” answered Nora, killing the start of what she knew would have been a great discussion but would have robbed her of her time and possibly one of Andrews blog posts on the issue.

The conference was being held on the 54th floor of the building which is renowned for its sophisticated Conference room.

They proceeded to the lobby of the hotel and on to the elevator, which was occupied by two well dress men.

“Aren’t you going back to Japan?” exclaimed one of the men dress in an obscure black business suite. It was then that Nora and Andrew began to stare into each other’s eyes as they both listening undoubtedly to the conversation with unwanted reservation.

“Oh! Sure, are you mad!” replied the other guy.

“You think I would want to get close to all that turmoil” added the guy in a reserved tone of voice as if he had notice how loud he had become.

The other guy answered, “So what about your family?”

“They are already on their way to Barbados” replied the other guy.

“HUH! Why not here is Jamaica?” exclaimed the other guy in astonishment. It was at the time that the numbers on the elevators indicator indicated that we had reached the 54th floor.

The other guy replied, “Because it is too close to Cuba”.

It was at the end of this sentence that the doors of the elevators welcome the sight of the 54th floor. Nora stared at Andrew and led the way out the elevator while the guys in the elevator continued their conversations without reservation for the lady which was now entering the elevator.

Nora and Andrew led themselves through the ball room doors, the found themselves at the front of 40 or more person which were in the room inclusive of the host which was now introducing a speaker.

The speaker was Patrick Markdown, a local web developer who had been successful in gathering traction for his creation of a gamified social network call Scoriva dot com.

“When we first gain the vision for Scoriva Dot Com, We had no idea it would have the traction it has today with over a million daily users from countries of the Caribbean and around the world”, it was at this point that Nora asked Andrew if he had joined that site.

Andrew replied softly, “No, It is not my type of social network”.

Nora smiled back as the speaker continued.

“So Scoriva bring a new level to the social experience by awarding points for every activity done through the site” announced the speaker.

“let us say you check in to a computer store to buy the latest Nova 5, You could check-in online and valuable points which could gain you badges and count as discounts to you next online purchase at this and any other stores….” the speaker replied.

Nora was about to take out her cell phone when like all the other attendant in the room, her phone began to give alert. She picked it up however as she was about to read the speaker blurted out.

“I just got a text that seems to indicate that Tokyo has been bombed and the Cubans have taken the Guantanamo Bay camp hence we might be at a high level of an invasion….” The speaker was immediately held by the host and reassured to continue.

That assurance however was not enough as the speaker made his way through the ball room doors after telling us that he was not sticking around under no circumstance with the threat of an invasion imminent.

It was then that we heard a large “bang” and we all ran to the nearest window were we could see the Norman Mayor International Airport on fire and helicopters fly in from the direction of the Kingston Harbour. The airport was on fire, based on the photos that Andrew had found on kwitter and acebook.

The rest of the attendant gazed on at the sight of the oblivion while Nora and Andrew journalist and analyzing minds kick and told it was best to make their way to somewhere safe. Andrew grabbed Nora by the arm and Headed for the stairway.

“Keep behind me and make it quick” shouted Andrew as he made his first steps down the stairs of the Jamaica Zeus.

“I think something serious is underway” yelled Andrew as they were near the 51st floor.

This type of exercise was taking a toll on Nora’s body as she unlike her counterpart was not the type to take physically intense sporting experience as running down the stairs of a 67 story tall building or even a marathon down downtown Main Street. She none the less gave the new physically enduring experience a run for her life as she knew nothing of what would become of her if she stayed in the building with the rest of attendance at the tech conference.

After a couple of minutes they pain staking-ly made it to the ground floor of the building into the reception hall.

Nora saw a guy with a Cuban flag on his shoulder heading her way from the back. She started to run to the nearest care after yelling “Run Andrew!”

Andrew took feet and motion, they both headed for the doors of the hotel as the Cuban gave chase. They both ran through the lawns of the building where Nora, quite restless from all the physical pressure she had to face coming down the stairway. Andrew held tight to a week Nora and saw a a taxi heading in the opposite direction, He fanned the vehicle and to their amazement the Cuban was still on their trail with a touting of gun fire and the driver stopped.

When they entered they say a old lady in the front and two high schools students in the back of the vehicle and they jump in at recording times, as if to say they had went through this before and Andrew shouted,

“Move, Move, Move!”

The Taxi sped off into the distant beam of the sun as the driver made it his mission to get the heck out of the area with haste.

They Cubans gave a shot at the taxi as the driver then proceeded to break every traffic rule known to man and possibly even alien but we all knew that it was a necessity of survival.

As they made their way out of town into the vicinity of St Catherine Nora asks Andrew “What happened to the JDF that we so were told would protect us in the event of this type of event?”

The driver of the vehicle chuckled and then proceeded to reply with “Maybe they are still at training from the blast that took out the airport?”
