An Essay of a Writer

With pride, I consider myself a writer --- a writer-by-heart, a writer who uses heart.

I haven't studied creative writing or any related course, but my advocacy to literature gives me the right to proclaim strongly that I'm a writer.

I have only completed two literature subjects in college yet I have read several materials. That's what makes me a writer.

Mock me now! Laugh at me loud. i don't care! I will still call myself a poet, a fictionist, a novelist, an essayist, a playwright, a psalmist, a scriptwriter or, in short, a writer.

Yes, I'm a writer because I love books. I was called once a bookworm or library person by my co-staffer in our college paper. Voraciously, I read a lot, because I do believe, all greatest writers are voracious readers. All books, in addition, were made because the authors read. Reading is indeed part of writing.

Huh! I'm a writer because I underwent boredom before. My lonesome was then cured by writing a novel. I should say, writing is form of boredom management.

Ouch! My heart was broken by a girl. For that, I'm a writer. I have forgotten that I was severely devastated by so-called love when I finished a poem. It's true. Writing is a great healer. Writers become open-minded and pain-proofed.

        Have I convinced you now?

Then, I a a writer. Writing is my hobby. Often, I write for the sake of collection. My secondary purpose of writing is to have a compilation of literary pieces that I can pass on to my next generation. It's possible, isn't it? Literature, like history, repeats itself and lasts forever as long as it is appreciated.

Writer is me.. Writer is me!

I'm writing because I wanted to make my pieces into a book. Who knows? I have been rejected several times but I will not quit writing by a mere rejection. Every well-known writer had experienced failure. they were once criticized and rejected. Yet, they stand still for the same goal. Writers, therefore, are not quitters!

I'm writing because I have got inspirations --- beautiful ladies who stole my heart and turned my head;  friends, who treated me special: family with endless love and understanding: spectacular views and places around: and everything under the sun and above the land. A good writer is, in fact, observant. He could conceptualize even from the smallest thing he sees. our world is full of writing ideas.

Call me materialistic or whatever. It doesn't matter to me. The truth is I'm writing because of rewards. Oftentimes, magazines and journals advertise an invitation for a literary or writing contests. I have been an applicant many times before. despite of failure, i'm still hopeful. someday, I could hit the prize. However, it is not only the at-stake that matters to me, but the pride. Being chosen among the aspirants is such a rewarding experience. Awardees are those who stand out and prominent. Their words were paid off and at the same time, they were put to the hall of the most famous people.

I'm a writer. I will not be tired to write it.

         I'm a writer..

         I'm a writer..

         I'm a writer..

I will not be tired to write, rather..

Dilemma

       Commerce? Or Education?

Many years ago, I have been in that skeptical state of mind, wherein I have found two in equilibrium scale. Both courses are interesting and profound.

If only I could take them up at the same time, I would. However, I had to select only one. Thus, it confused me so much. I weighed them thoroughly.

       Education.

I like it! I’m affectionate to children. I love going to school. I have the passion for teaching. Therefore, I must be an educator.

       Commerce.

I know, there are plenty of job opportunities in the business world. I could be an office clerk. Maybe I could find much better job title in a big company through hard work and perseverance. Being a manager of a banking institution was my ultimate target. And, putting up my own business was my personal choice and my passion.

Many times, I asked myself. Education or Commerce? Commerce or Education? Still, I don’t know. Hence, I sought advice. My cousin wanted me to be teacher like her, as well as my grade school classmate. They both have seen potential in me as a pedagogue. Knowing that it is the noblest profession, I was still in chaotic state of thinking.

        Commerce or Education?

After a long deliberation, I finally opted Bachelor of Science in Commerce. The childish and cowardly factor I considered was being free from Licensure Examination for Teachers. The truth was LET weakened my confidence. To fail in that exam would be a saddening and frustrating experience. It’s such a shame if I could not pass it.

Four years, I took up the course seriously and wholeheartedly. Without regrets and worries, I graduated. After many years of odyssey, I was still unfulfilled in my chosen career. Success has been bitter to me. Self-actualization was very stingy.

It was eight years ago when I first stepped on the Alma Mater’s ground. And one day, I came back to her. But that day, my mind was in order. Dilemma has no chance to stir up my head. Determined, I realized that BeED is my greater choice and that… teaching is my calling.

Taking up Education course, I could say now that I’m satiable with this, not because I’m getting older and I must succeed in this field whether I like it or not but because the country is in need of a devoted. Clever teacher like me. This is not to raise my own chair. Indeed, it is the certainty of me that I could be an asset of the government and be of great help to the children, whose futures are dependent on teacher.

My Education: My Contribution to the Future

"Education is what survives when what has been happened has been forgotten." It is quoted by B.F. Skinner, an American philosopher. Whatever happens, an educated person will always be one.

Everybody wants to be educated because everyone has the right to avail quality education. Despite of the expense of acquiring bachelor's degree, nobody is satisfied of gaining low educational level. Since, education is a continuous process. Most of the degree holders further their education. They believe that education is growth.

Nobody wants to be under-educated. Everyone hopes to be educated and professional. Unfortunately, very few thinks of what contribution they can give to the future.

It's quite heart-breaking that scholars nowadays are not well-oriented of what education could give them and what they could share to the society. Some are studying because there's a need to have diploma. Many are planning to go abroad and leave the country after graduation, which contributes to the brain-drain.

Though, overseas employment helps the Philippines very much, it does not mean that the overseas employees are already contributors to the future. Yes, to the future, but not to the future of the Filipinos.

Well, I have no right to oppress them. This is why I'm studying very well so that I can have a contribution to our nation's future -- not to other nation's future. If it's God's will, I would rather teach here in our own country and teach the Filipino children -- who are the real futures. If am lucky enough to pass the licensure examination and get a teaching job, it is now my contribution to the future.
