Chapter 1

From covering regions with sand, snow, and lava to bringing in new named areas and knocking down others, Fortnite map has gradually evolved throughout each season of play. As of season eight, lava came to Fortnite in both a section of the main map and across the entire map in the limited time game mode the Floor is Lava. These changes serve as much as points of intrigue as genuine advancements in the dynamic, thoroughly interesting map.

In other battle royales, you can tell a place has already been looted by open doors or empty chests. In Fortnite, a visited place is a frantic wreckage of destroyed infrastructure, of ramps snaking up hillsides, of zigzagging towers flecked with loot that a downed player killers didn’t want. The architecture of desire built over a place original design tells a story of what might have happened: the exact path someone took, the ebb and flow of a build fight. Players take the space Fortnite developers created and change it, make it their own. Then it is destroyed, or the match ends, and everyone starts over again.

Of course, with this being a Battle Royale, it's unlikely you will find much time to look at the scenery. Thankfully, Fortnite combat still feels surprisingly fresh almost two years in, and that is primarily down to two things. The first is the game unique building mechanic, a holdover from its Save The World mode. By harvesting materials like brick or wood with your trusty pickaxe, players are able to build rudimentary structures with an intuitive grid based building system. If you are out in the open, you might aim to create a wall to take cover behind, while traversing sheer cliff faces is much easier when you can construct a ramp, or a series of steps when descending.

Your experience with Fortnite will be different depending on when you get involved though, because the meta constantly changes as Epic introduces new items and vaults old ones. Just like the map frequently changing, some of the weapons available will be completely different from month to month. In the past we’ve seen new items introduced that have gone down a treat like the Heavy Sniper and Rift-to-Go, but there is also been some truly awful additions such as the Guided Missile and the Jetpack. Of course, fan favourites like the Grappler and Bouncer haven’t proved immune to being thrown in the vault either, despite the outcry from the community.

Epic has managed to create a storyline of sorts that goes alongside the map changes. When it all started, the famous meteor could be seen in the sky. Weeks later it crashed into the Dusty Depot. From there, the community interest in Fortnite world building caught fire. Strange events like the Durr Burger statue relocation, Kevin the Cube, and bizarre butterfly rift that took players to a white void have successfully kept players hooked. If you have been around since the beginning, the changes are really neat to see over time.
